In contrast to a Search Engine, which, in its linear recitation of facts, prioritizes declarative knowlege (knowing what), a “Syntax Engine” is imagined as a digital aid to complex activities which, though structured, depend on implicit knowledge, rules of thumb, and improvisation (knowing how). Cooking was selected as it is a practical skillset widely distributed through the population, and one for which a large amount of structured data (in the form of recipes) is readily available online.
By adding and removing ingredients and search terms one at a time, the user can arrive at a combination iteratively, exploring the data dynamically and developing a collaborative relationship with it. Danjou provides links to the original recipes from which its data is drawn, while also conveying the common features and grammatical structure of a dish or cuisine.
